Measuring wellbeing

How do you measure wellbeing? What wellbeing indicators are the most useful? These are two questions often asked by business leaders and managers looking to implement wellbeing initiatives in their organisations.

It is widely accepted that promoting wellbeing at work is a good idea. Keeping your people healthy and productive benefits everyone. But those in the organisation who are responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating wellbeing projects still find it difficult to decide which wellbeing indicators to use.

So what do you do? Here at Cafe Therapy we have designed a wellbeing model that brings together the most useful wellbeing indicators found in successful wellbeing projects and that, crucially, are supported by contemporary research and theory. This not only helps you quickly measure wellbeing in your organisation but also gives you peace of mind that you are using the best wellbeing indicators available.

Wellbeing indicators

Physical

We all recognise the links between physical health and wellbeing. But our approach goes further than simply promoting a healthy lifestyle. We also explore important factors like controlling environmental surroundings, and personal management, to give a more holistic view of the physical aspects of wellbeing.

Emotional

When people think about what good wellbeing looks like, they often describe positive emotions, including good mental health. We measure the factors that underpin emotional wellbeing – for example self-acceptance and opportunities for personal growth – that also support mental health.

Social

Most of us work in teams and we spend much of our time communicating and interacting with colleagues, so it is for these reasons that the social aspects of wellbeing are so important. Our approach explores the social environment and everyday interactions that lead to wellbeing.

Spiritual

First things first; this has nothing to do with religion. The important and often overlooked aspect of spiritual wellbeing is about the benefits that come from having direction and purpose. Working out where you are going in life and how you are going to get there is good for your wellbeing.

So come and work with us. We use questionnaires and focus groups to measure and gather data on the wellbeing indicators described above. Then we work with you to design and apply solutions. After that we monitor how they are working in practice, and finally we evaluate the successes and gather learning for the next round of development. Sound good?
